Handling Your Child’s Challenging Behaviors at Every Age
2020 Child Abuse Prevention Month Campaign
The Yolo County Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) and Yolo County Children’s Alliance (YCCA) are excited to share Handling Your Child’s Challenging Behaviors at Every Age. This new resource for parents and caregivers provides positive discipline tips and resources to handle challenging behaviors in babies, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, and teenagers.
This guide supports the following protective factors known to strengthen families and reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect: knowledge of parenting and child development and social and emotional competence of children.

Nurturing Children During Times of Stress: A Guide to Help Children Bloom
2019 Child Abuse Prevention Month Campaign
The Yolo County Child Abuse Prevention Council (CAPC) and Yolo County Children’s Alliance (YCCA) are excited to share Nurturing Children During Times of Stress: A Guide to Help Children Bloom. This guide contains tips and resources that parents and caregivers can use to promote resilience in their children and themselves. The guide explains the effects of intense stress or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Adverse Community Environments, focusing on prevention and emphasizing that healing is possible at any age.
This guide supports the following protective factors known to strengthen families and reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect: parental resilience, concrete support in times of need, and social and emotional competence of children.

Weathering the Storms: A Guide to Healthy Expressions of Emotions for Parents and Children
2018 Child Abuse Prevention Month Campaign
Weathering the Storms: A Guide to Healthy Expressions of Emotions for Parents and Children discusses how to identify emotions, the importance of empathy, and how to prevent and weather emotional storms.
In addition to teaching parents and children about the healthy expressions of emotions, the Weathering the Storms guide supports the following protective factors known to strengthen families and reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect: parental resilience, knowledge of parenting and child development, and social and emotional competence.

The guide is designed to help parents teach their children to identify and express feelings in a healthy way, while also developing skills to better regulate their own emotions. Weathering the Storms covers identifying emotions and the power of empathy, using calming activities when emotions are building, weathering emotional storms by waiting before talking, responding to emotions in the calm after the storm, and learning to predict future storms.

Make Time for Yourself – A Self-Care Guide for Busy Parents
2017 Child Abuse Prevention Month Campaign
Make Time for Yourself is a guide for parents and caregivers that points out the importance of self-care and provides many self-care ideas to try.
In addition to helping parents learn more about taking care of themselves, Make Time for Yourself is designed to prevent child maltreatment by supporting the following protective factors known to strengthen families: parental resilience and social connections. For example, when parents take deep breaths, exercise, or do a favorite hobby, they increase their capacity to be resilient. When parents call a friend or hug someone, they bolster social connections.

To help parents prioritize self-care, the guide covers the importance of self-care and divides specific self-care ideas into those that only take 5 minutes to do and those that take more time. There are also activities that parents can do with children. The ideas involve calming the mind, connecting with supportive relatives and friends, exercising, laughing, finding activities that bring joy, and getting enough sleep.

Choosing a Child Care Provider
Choosing a Child Care Provider offers guidance for parents who are looking for the right child care provider for their child. The guide seeks to empower parents to trust themselves and their knowledge about their child’s needs when choosing a provider. The guide gives questions to ask providers, as well as questions about supervision, the child care site, and hygiene and safety.

Talk+Play=Connect Toolkit for Families
2015 & 2016 Child Abuse Prevention Month Campaign
The Talk+Play=Connect Toolkit for Families provides information and ideas about talking, playing, and connecting with children, as well as information and tip sheets on Times to Connect with children.
In addition to helping parents find positive ways to interact with their children, the information and resources in this toolkit and on our website are designed to prevent child maltreatment by supporting the following protective factors known to strengthen families: knowledge of parenting and child development, social and emotional competence of children, and nurturing and attachment.

You can give parents the whole toolkit or tailor the toolkit by distributing the introductory pieces and the age-specific tip sheet(s) to the families you serve. You can use the toolkit to support and strengthen families by talking with them about the information and activity ideas, modeling how to talk to children and do the activities, providing opportunities for parents to engage with children, and suggesting other activities for parents to do with their children.
