Child Abuse Prevention Program

Step by Step/Paso a Paso is an intensive home visiting program for first time parents who are facing challenges or who are overburdened in some way. The program provides emotional and practical support to pregnant women and to families of newborns.

The Mission of  the Step by Step/Paso a Paso Program is to improve the infant-parent relationship by enhancing skills, by promoting healthy child development and by promoting bonding in a safe home environment.

Our team consists of experienced paraprofessional Family Support Workers, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Family Assessment Social Worker and a Resource Specialist.

The heart of our program is the home visiting services provided by the Family Support Workers.  From pregnancy through the child’s 5th birthday, the Family Support Worker meets with and supports the family. Together they work on the following goals, emphasizing the ones that the family deems most important:

  • Learning about child development
  • Enhanced social, emotional and cognitive development for the child
  • Positive infant-parent relationships
  • Setting and reaching parent defined family goals
  • Coping skills for stressful situations
  • Accessing health services for child and parent
  • Parent-Child bonding and attachment

A Family Support Worker develops a relationship with the family and can provide pointers related to everything from self-care during pregnancy to how to soothe a crying baby to how to ensure adequate nutrition for a babies and young children and how to create a safe home environment.

In addition to intensive home visiting services, we also offer:

  • Individual and Family Counseling
  • Support Groups
  • Referrals to Community Agencies
